The Bay Area’s first living levee is now open at Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve, and Nuestra Casa was part of making it happen. This horizontal levee, about 500 feet long, uses a gentle vegetated slope and more than 2,000 native plants to protect the shoreline from sea level rise, filter treated wastewater, and restore marsh habitat. Community groups helped grow the plants and create educational signs, while researchers will study its ecological benefits for years. Read the full story by clicking here to see how Nuestra Casa and local partners are creating a model for nature-based climate adaptation that other bayfront communities can follow.
